About :

The longest railway tunnel, the densest network, the most passengers. Switzerland is setting one record after another. "Einstein" is going on a record-breaking journey itself, showing how high-tech is being used to renew the rail network and how the railway will roll into the future in an energy-efficient and climate-neutral way. 🔔 Subscribe now to SRF Wissen on YouTube 👉 / @srfwissen ⏰ A new episode of "SRF Einstein" every Thursday Digital First at 5.30 p.m. More about the video ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– 🚂 A train for the Guinness Book of Records The RHB is going on a record hunt with the longest train in the world on the picturesque Albula route. What are the challenges of driving a two-kilometer-long and 3,000-tonne train over spiral tunnels, bridges and viaducts? "Einstein" looks behind the scenes of the record-breaking journey and the preparatory work, which was not always problem-free. 🚊 Rail maintenance is a technical masterpiece For the railway country Switzerland, its 5300 km long rail network is the lifeblood of Switzerland. But the routes, some of which are over a hundred years old, must be maintained. And unlike abroad, track renovations are usually carried out during ongoing operations. Using the example of the Lötschberg Summit Tunnel, Einstein» shows the technical and logistical effort that is made to maintain rail traffic despite total renovation and asks what this means for the safety of workers 💡 Saving energy for 100 years Until 1920, the railway ran on coal and needed over 4000 GWh of energy. From 1920 onwards, it was steadily electrified, lightweight construction and more modern locomotives were added and in the last ten years a variety of other energy-saving measures have been introduced, such as intelligent driving and heating systems. Conclusion: Although rail traffic has increased tenfold in the last 100 years and trains have become faster and more comfortable, energy consumption has halved. We show which measures made this possible and how the railway will become even more efficient in the future. 💧 Hydrogen train "made in Switzerland" The Swiss railway network is 99 percent electrified. And over 90 percent of the railway power comes from hydropower. That is a top value. In the EU, however, only 57 percent of the railway network is electrified on average. In the USA, it is only 1 percent. How can the railway travel into the future in a climate-neutral way? Stadlerrail has set new standards in this regard and built a train with hydrogen propulsion. The first train will be used in the Los Angeles metropolitan area. How safe and how efficient is this train? "Einstein" takes an exclusive look.
