The sale of evening cereal, an indispensable flavor especially in the winter months, has started in Ödemiş. Thanks to the city’s famous gevrek bakery Kumman, Ödemiş residents can find gevrek both during the day and in the evening. Mehmet Kumman, the operator of the Kumman gevrek bakery, told Yerelgüç, “My family came from Üsküdar, Istanbul. We have been making gevrek in Ōdemiş since 1966. We have been making gevrek for four generations, from grandfather to son and from him to grandson. We have been making gevrek in our bakery on Hastane Street in Ödemiş since 1981.” THE IDEA BELONGS TO MY FATHER Noting that the idea of making evening cereal belonged to his father, Mehmet Kumman said, “It was my brother’s idea. My father Mustafa Kumman passed it on to me, and I passed it on to my son Mustafa Kumman. A photo from 1966 of the first gevrek bakery is in our bakery. When my grandfather first came to Ödemiş from Istanbul, he was making cookies. Then he started producing the cereal. My father and his brothers got together and opened a bakery. Evening cereal started to be sold in movie theaters and summer parks. Thus, the concept of evening cereal emerged. After working together for 10 years, my father left and opened the Kumman cereal bakery on his own. Until 2010, sales were made with wheelbarrows on the streets. Times have changed and riding around the streets with wheelbarrows is over. Nowadays, sales are made with electric bicycles or people come to the bakery and buy it in person. I thank all the people of Ödemiş for choosing us,” he said. TIMES HAVE CHANGED, GREENBREAK IS NO LONGER SOLD WITH WHEELBARROWS Şerif Döner, one of the employees of Kumman Gevrek bakery, said, “I have been working in bakeries since 1981. I first started as an apprentice. Then I turned this into a profession. I have been making a living from this profession for years. I sold crispy ... Times have changed and we need to keep up with the times,” he said. Necmi Civil, a 78-year-old employee of Kumman Gevrek Bakery, said, “I have been in the cereal business since 2001. I love my job and I consume cereal with pleasure.”
