Memoirs of a Militia Sergeant is Antofágica's first book of the year! Written by Manuel Antônio de Almeida and published in serial form between 1852 and 1853, the work tells the story of the mischief of young Leonardo and life in Rio during the time of Dom João VI. With simple language and great originality, Manuel inaugurates with this work a new literary style in the country: the rogue novel. The Antofágica edition features more than 50 pieces of art by Manuela Navas. Composer and writer Nei Lopes, author of Dicionário da História Social do Samba, writes an introduction about his personal journey not only with the book, but with the city of Rio de Janeiro. In the afterwords, Giovanna Dealtry, PhD in Literature from PUC-Rio and professor at the Institute of Literature at UERJ, constructs an overview of the narrative dynamics and the concept of roguery, and writer Sérgio Rodrigues discusses the eternal youth of Memórias de um sargento de milícias. Gabriela Mayer, journalist and literary critic, offers us an essay on the correlations between literature and journalism, Manuel Antônio de Almeida's primary profession. The video lessons are taught by historian Vinícius Barbosa, who graduated from UNIFESP. ► Get your copy of “Memoirs of a Militia Sergeant”: https://amzn.to/3OSf95R ► Books mentioned in the video: “Dom Casmurro”, by Machado de Assis: https://amzn.to/3uLjBMR “Macunaíma”, by Mário de Andrade: https://amzn.to/3OXrrK2 ► Learn about Antofágica's first course, Journey through Russian Literature.
