In the year 80 AD, Rome shines in the splendour of new monumental buildings. The Colosseum is opened by Emperor Titus in a 100-day games. But everyday life in the capital is not particularly glamorous for most Romans. More than a million people jostle for space in an estimated 13 square kilometres. That makes it 29 times more cramped than in today's Cologne. The ancient tenement blocks, the insulae, are close together. Devastating fires are the order of the day. The film tells the story of a day in the life of the Roman fireman Quintus Pompeius Naso in the year 80 AD. From morning roll call to the night-time fire operation. Quintus' story is invented, but it is still true, researched and condensed from historical biographies and the latest research findings. With the help of scientists, the documentary reconstructs everyday life in ancient Rome, and the character of Quintus brings it to life. This video is a ZDF production in collaboration with Gruppe 5.
