At night, police chief Lebus is patrolling Frankfurt's East Harbor. His colleague Max Keller, almost 20 years his senior, is sitting next to him. Their thoughtful conversation about very private matters is interrupted when they discover a taxi that was reported stolen two hours ago between the harbor basin and the warehouse. When the patrol car that was called in as backup arrives, it is already too late. Three shots rip through the night, and his colleague Keller can only recover Lebus dead. But the officers quickly find him. They are able to arrest a fugitive man who does not fit in at all in this dark area. Kurt Scharnak, in his mid-50s, had previously managed to throw a plastic bag with longish contents into a container. The next morning, Scharnak turns to lawyer Dr. Franck. During a line-up, Keller clearly identifies Scharnak as the shooter. He claims to have had an appointment with an unknown man, but claims to have had nothing to do with the shooting. He also claims to have taken the S-Bahn to the port rather than a taxi. During their research, Dr. Franck and Matula keep coming across new surprises.
