7 Important Tips for Heart Stent Patients - Warnings for Patients Who Have Had a Heart-Lung Stent Placed. Recovery and Rehabilitation: Your heart rate and other vital signs will be closely monitored for 24 hours after the procedure. Because the procedure involves inserting a small catheter through the skin, the incision is small, so most patients can return to work within a week of the procedure. Your doctor will usually explain the results of the procedure to you immediately after it is done, or come to see you once you return to your room. You will be taken to the recovery room for about 20 to 30 minutes and then taken to your room. It is usual for the large cannula to be left in place until the heparin (a blood-thinning medication used during the procedure) has worn off. It is important that you remain lying down with your leg straight while the large cannula is still in your leg. After a blood test is performed to confirm that the heparin has worn off (about 3 to 4 hours after you return to the room), a nurse will remove the cannula. This is done either by applying firm pressure to the area for 15-20 minutes or by using a special device to press firmly on the upper thigh area for about an hour. This process may be uncomfortable but is necessary to stop the bleeding. Wound care: It is normal for the upper thigh area to be sensitive for a few days after the catheterization procedure and it is also normal for this area to bruise. However, you should contact your doctor if you notice any of the following symptoms: The appearance of a hard, sensitive lump under the skin around the wound area Pain, swelling, redness and/or pus discharge from the wound area Coldness in the foot on the same side as the operation High temperature/fever If the upper thigh area begins to bleed, you should lie on your back and apply firm pressure to the bleeding area while keeping your leg as straight as possible.
