Every person has their own individual internal clock, which significantly influences the day-wake rhythm and our sleep. Strictly speaking, there are countless internal clocks that everyone carries within them. Not only does the brain have an internal clock that controls our sleep, but organs such as the liver or heart and even individual cells can also have internal clocks. Our genes determine how these internal clocks tick, and so they are hardly changeable. A well-functioning internal clock enables restful sleep and helps us to feel awake and full of energy during the day. But what happens to us if we ignore our natural sleeping habits? And shouldn't we actually organize our lives according to our internal clock and our natural sleep-wake rhythm? Studies clearly show that there are people with different biorhythms that also affect sleep. There are people of the so-called lark type, who get up early without any problems and are fit in the morning. On the other hand, there are the so-called owls. They are often tired in the morning, but much more active in the evening. The problem: Our work and school world usually does not take this into account and affects sleep. School usually starts for everyone - whether you're an early bird or an owl - between 7:30 a.m. and 8 a.m. The core working hours of many employers often start at 7 or 8 a.m., not to mention the many shift workers who regularly have to turn night into day and thus affect their sleep. All of this has consequences for performance and health. Nevertheless, the issue of sleep is usually not taken seriously. A classic case in which traditions in society are more persistent than new scientific findings about sleep. // Our chapters: 00:00 - Always tired?
