The name of the Fort derives from Mount Diamante, on the summit of which it was built. It can be reached from Due Fratelli in about half an hour's walk. Alternatively, from Piazza Manin you can take the Casella train, get off at the Trensasco stop, then take the steep path that goes up to the Fort. During the Austrian siege of 1747, the top of the hill was chosen by the Genoese to prepare a star-shaped redoubt, with palisades and wicker gabions filled with earth. Left unguarded, it was occupied by the Austrians on the evening of 12 April 1747. The first project for the Fort, drawn up in the summer of that same year, was impracticable as it fitted very well on a flat surface, but not on the narrow summit of the hill. It was therefore necessary to modify it, adapting it to the morphology of the land, while the construction work was interrupted with the Peace of Aachen: at that date only the foundation works had been prepared. In 1756, encouraged by funding from the Durazzo family, a new project was drawn up. Following this, the work began in June of the same year, and ended several years later. The eighteenth-century Fort was slightly different from the current one; the substantial differences were represented by the original sloping slate roof, the structure of the barracks and the protective fence. The roofing gave continuous problems due to exposure to the sea wind and the north wind: in fact the tiles kept coming off. After the annexation to the Kingdom of Sardinia, to solve this problem, the sloping roof was eliminated, leaving the terrace uncovered. On 30 April 1800, during the siege, a violent battle broke out on those heights, involving the Austrian army, stationed at Due Fratelli, and half a French brigade, entrenched and isolated on Diamante. To aid the latter, an expedition consisting of two French line divisions set out from Forte Sperone, which attacked and defeated the Austrians at Due Fratelli. The completion and transformation works were carried out after 1814, under the direction of the Royal Sardinian Corps of Engineers. With the transformation of the roof, machicolations were inserted on the main front and on the north side. To reach the terrace, the tower behind it was built, with a spiral staircase inside. The last historical episode of some importance dates back to June 29, 1857, when a group of Mazzinian rebels, with a night coup, took possession of the Fort after having assassinated a sergeant, but abandoned it immediately afterward as the revolt in the city had failed. The work was definitively abandoned in 1914. Most of the metal structures were removed at the end of the last war. After the recent restoration, carried out by the Municipality of Sant'Olcese, on whose territory it is located, Forte Diamante is closed to the public
