50 Details From Rings of Power Season 2: It's not every day you get to follow your feet and step into a real-life fantasy land, but last year, during production on The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power Season 2, a small group of journalists and I got to do just that. Let me tell you, visiting Middle-earth involves a lot more mud than you might expect, but it's worth it just to walk through the hallowed halls of Numenor's throne room (OK, Numenor is next to Middle-earth, but you get the idea!). During our visit, we sat down with showrunners Patrick McKay and JD Payne, as well as makeup artists, costume designers, stunt coordinators, and location scouts (and more!) to get the scoop on what's in store for Season 2 of Prime Video's fantasy epic. Here's everything I learned while I was there and back. Oh, and while we're at it, here's an exclusive look at Galadriel in Season 2! We chatted at length with showrunners Patrick McKay and JD Payne on the set of Season 2. There was a lot said during this conversation (more on that in a moment), but the one that stood out to me was a comment about the darkness of Season 2 and the Bleak TV™ era we find ourselves in. “There’s a seriousness to Middle-earth and its stories, and we’re embracing that,” McKay explains. “You know, it’s very fashionable to be cynical and roll your eyes and be postmodern and wink, wink, wink. And we’re not going to play that game.” I can’t help but smile every time I think back to that moment in our conversation. There’s something so refreshing about knowing how dark things are about to get but not having to worry about matching the cynicism of so many other contemporary stories. And I can tell they mean it. I’ve talked to a lot of showrunners over the years, and I can’t think of anyone who’s been more excited about their upcoming season than McKay and Payne were about Rings of Power Season 2.
