Morning press conference from the National Palace. Thursday, February 1, 2024 President AMLO. 0:00 Start of broadcast 22:27 President Andrés Manuel López Obrador's press conference begins 30:23 Comprehensive report on actions to strengthen the education sector 1:01:34 Question and answer session We present the results of the work carried out in the education sector during the Fourth Transformation: labor justice for members of the teaching staff; new textbooks with science and humanism; a historic scholarship program that reduces school dropouts and the improvement of schools through La Escuela es Nuestra. In this way, we guarantee the right to education. To date, there are 945,432 permanent teachers. In addition, between 2022 and 2023, the federation invested around 80 billion pesos, more than approved by the Chamber of Deputies, with the purpose of improving salary conditions. This year, the projection is 37,311 million pesos. The 2022 study plans for all educational levels and grades in the 2023-2024 school year have a humanistic and scientific approach. They promote inclusive, intercultural, critical and gender-equal education. One of the achievements in terms of education was the necessary and historic change to the content of textbooks. Mexico is the only country in Latin America that provides them to basic education students. The 2023-2024 school year recorded a production of 156.3 million free textbooks and educational materials for the regular program and special education of the New Mexican School. Of every 100 girls and boys who entered primary school in 2018, only 66 students reached upper secondary education; currently, 84 enter high school, which reflects the positive impact of the Benito Juárez García Scholarships for Well-Being. In the 2018-2019 school year, the dropout rate was 14.2 percent and in the 2022-2023 school year it dropped to 8.7 percent. In higher education, the dropout rate was 7.2 percent, the lowest in the last ten years; 89 out of every 100 high school graduates enter higher education in the 2022-2023 school year. The number of students in higher education who are part of the vulnerable population increased. From 2018 to 2023, the increase was 32.6 percent, going from 1,293,021 young people to 1,714,905 students. These data are due to the delivery of the Benito Juárez García Welfare Scholarships; 12.5 million students from basic to higher education received them in 2023, which meant a historic investment of 80 billion pesos. La Escuela es Nuestra allocates 50 percent of its budget to public educational institutions in municipalities and localities with high and very high marginalization with indigenous and Afro-Mexican populations; it provides priority attention to Chiapas, Veracruz, Oaxaca and Guerrero. February 27 is the date of the next scheduled payment for recently incorporated schools. We disapprove of the surrender of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation regarding the Law of the Electric Industry. Our mission is to defend the public interest of individuals. It is urgent to reform the Judicial Branch so that it is not at the service of the oligarchy.
