Julian Rieckmann was the defining figure in the victory against Borussia Dortmund II - and not just because of his two goals. Julian Rieckmann made the difference: he headed Waldhof Mannheim into the lead (74th minute), caused the penalty that Ole Pohlmann used to equalize in injury time, and scored again in the 95th minute. These were the defining scenes in Mannheim's quite fortunate 2:1 victory against Borussia Dortmund II. The Palatinate team has thus made a big jump in the table, is in a non-relegation position and is now two points ahead of 17th place. The Palatinate team has benefited from Hallescher FC's defeat at Jahn Regensburg. The more than 1,000 Waldhof fans who had traveled with them had to wait almost half an hour for their team's first chance: Jalen Hawkins played Terrence Boyd at the far post. His volley shot, however, landed right in the arms of Borussia keeper Silas Ostrzinski (28th minute). However, it was the only notable action in the first half, and the score was 0:0 at halftime. The game was also tough in the second half. Mannheim struggled and, apart from Martin Kobylański's header (57th), hardly came close to scoring. Because the Palatinate team needed a win in the relegation battle more urgently than Dortmund, who had already achieved their stated goals for the season, coach Jan Zimmermann's team switched to counterattacking - and thus created a real goal threat: In the 64th minute, Waldhof keeper Omer Hanin had to risk his neck to pluck the ball from the feet of the onrushing Ole Pohlmann at the last moment (64th). A few minutes later, Mannheim were lucky when Julian Hettwer put the ball too far in front of him (70th). And when nothing is happening up front, sometimes a standard situation is all that is needed: After Luca Bolay's corner, Julian Rieckmann got the ball from goalkeeper Ostrzinski and headed the ball into the Dortmund goal (74'). Mannheim then got into the game better, but were hardly able to create any goal threat themselves. Mannheim wanted to keep Dortmund away from their own goal and bring the victory to a close. Then Rieckmann almost became a tragic hero by pulling Falko Michel to the ground in his own penalty area. Referee Fabienne Michels hesitated briefly, but then awarded a penalty to Dortmund II. Pohlmann gave Waldhof goalkeeper Hanin no chance (90'+1).
