The Veltins private brewery turned 200 this year. The company from the Sauerland village of Grevenstein is one of the top ten beer producers in Germany and is still owned by the Veltins family. However, the family does not appear in public at all. Michael Huber was the face of Veltins for almost three decades. This week he retired. As general representative and doer of old grist and grain, he struck up a spontaneous friendship with Schalke manager Rudi Assauer in the 1990s. The latter's life's work, the private financing of the arena at Schalke, was only possible with Huber's help. He financed the modern stadium with the brewery's money and, incidentally, made it one of the largest beer taps in the world. With great success: Hardly any other naming rights sold to a stadium in Germany have become as common in everyday language as the name "Veltins Arena" in Gelsenkirchen.
