He is responsible for the Manhattan Project, the first American atomic test on July 16, 1945 in New Mexico, and father of the American atomic bomb. The physicist is accompanied by his French colleague, Louis Leprince Ringuet, who discusses with him the responsibility of the scientist in society. Speaking in French, Oppenheimer explains that the scientist must respect and seek the truth. He must also transmit and explain what he has discovered. He talks about the doubts he had about the atomic bomb: doubts of Man, he says. Despite everything, he is not in favor of restricting science: everything that is possible must be done. It is the destiny of Man to know everything he can, he says. Archive images INA National Audiovisual Institute http://www.ina.fr #INA #History
