About :

In this video, I talk about the suffering that my change of social class caused. There was suffering at the time of the transition: geographical uprooting, shame of my body, my clothes, my way of expressing myself, of what I called my cultural shortcomings, my way of standing, of laughing… There was also, and above all, the deep distress of having felt the ties with my family (so great and so loving) wither away. And there is, even today, the feeling of being in some way outside the class. I myself am very grateful to have had access to testimonies from transclass people, who helped me to put words to my experience and to move forward better. I wanted, in turn, to bring one more word on this subject. Moreover, I think that this kind of testimony more generally gives food for thought about class norms, social dominations, etc. FYI, at the beginning of the video, I quickly mention two or three topics that have already been covered quite a bit in other videos, so don't hesitate to skip the beginning if it's repetitive for you. Time markers: 0:00 - Introduction 5:57 - Geographic uprooting 10:22 - The shame of expressing oneself 14:05 - The impression of being uneducated 17:50 - Dress codes 24:50 - The relationship to the body 29:46 - Class attitudes and postures 33:12 - Ties to family 41:36 - Living your life as a transclass Some resources mentioned throughout the video: Videos: Report "The challenge of transclasses", directed by Jean-Louis Saporeto for France Télévision. A very nice documentary that simply offers to listen to transclass people. Video by Elyane C, who talks in particular about the relationship between obesity and social classes: • [Decryption] ARTE - An obese world...... Readings: Maria Candéa and Laélia Véron, Le français est à nous! Chantal Jacquet, Les transclasses ou la non-reproduction Pierre Bayard, Comment parler des livres que l'on n'a pas lire? Nicolas Journin, Voyage de classes Didier Eribon, Retour à Reims Jean-François Amadieu, Le Poids des apparences For your information, I will very soon be making a video on the work of sociologist Jean-François Amadieu (on the privilege of beauty and on the relationship between beauty and social classes).
