Contemporary witnesses, experts and the editorial staff of the “Krone” describe their personal impressions. On October 11, 2008, shortly after one o'clock in the morning, the then governor of Carinthia, Jörg Haider, was killed in a car accident on the way to his house. Haider was critically injured and died a short time later on the way to Klagenfurt Hospital. The official memorial service took place in Klagenfurt on October 18. 25,000 people - including many representatives of the Republic - bid farewell to Haider on Neuer Platz. The scene of the accident in Lambichl became a place of remembrance.
