Złoty Stok from a drone Spring 2022 Złoty Stok a city in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship, in Ząbkowice County, the seat of the Złoty Stok urban-rural commune. The city is located at the foot of the Złote Mountains, on the Czech border, on national road no. 46, which is the only entrance from the east to the Kłodzko Valley. The medieval mining settlement (traces of gold exploitation from the 10th century) was established in connection with gold mining in the area; city rights in 1334. The city belonged to the Silesian Piasts, and from 1392 under Czech rule. According to many Czech, German and Polish researchers, mining in the vicinity of Złoty Stok has a tradition of over 1000 years, although there are no written historical records confirming the existence of mining works in this area before the 13th century. Złoty Stok suffered a lot during the Thirty Years' War. In 1638, another fire destroyed the town hall, the Evangelical church and 60 houses. The fire consumed maps and registers of many existing mines as well as city documents. The beginning of the 16th century saw the peak of gold mining and smelting, as well as the city itself. Their rapid development is evidenced by the interest of the most important trading houses and mining and smelting companies in Europe at that time (Turzonów, Welsów, Imhoffów and Fuggerów from Augsburg). In 1529, there were 145 mines and a dozen or so small smelters in Złoty Stok. Twenty years later, in the years 1545-1549, the number of mines increased to 190, the amount of ore extracted exceeded 30,000 tons, and the annual gold production was approx. 60 kg (max. 140 kg), which was approx. 8% of gold production in Europe. In 1520, the city received a newly built mint in the form of a massive and safe building that exists to this day. After the Hussite War, the city council relatively quickly converted to the Lutheran faith, and the city parish church, rebuilt in 1517, became an Evangelical church. (Until the end of 1945, it bore the name of St. Salvator). It was rebuilt again in the 19th century. In 1583, a cemetery chapel was built, which, due to the animosity of the Protestants, the Catholics were forced to use as their church (Holy Trinity) from 1708. Because the religious relations of the residents of Złoty Stok changed over the course of several decades (approx. 80% of the residents were Catholics), the city community built a parish church in the neo-Gothic style in less than 2 years (1877-78).
