The first three floors of the tower were built between 1225 and 1265. In the fourteenth century, the current bell loft was built and six bells were installed for the first time. On Palm Sunday 1446, the tower burned down due to a lightning strike and the bells were destroyed. In the 16th century, the medieval spire burned down. A baroque spire was built again between 1633 and 1637. For that occasion, the Hemony brothers melted down a number of bells to create two new bells and since then, four bells have hung in the tower. The Hemony bells were cast in 1657 and had diameters of 182 and 195 cm and weighed 4150 and 4875 kg. The other two smaller bells were cast by Jan and Willem Hoerken in 1460, weighing approximately 2600 kg and having a diameter of 160 cm, and Segewin Hatiseren in 1521, weighing approximately 1230 kg and having a diameter of 125 cm. The entire tower was restored between 1920 and 1925. Twenty years later, the Germans blew up the staircase to prevent the English from ascending. During the restoration after the war, the tower burned down again in 1948. A Polygoon video of this can be found via the following link: • Church tower Walburgiskerk in 1948 by ... . The spire, bells and the interior of the tower were lost. In 1950, conservation measures were taken on the stone part of the tower and a concrete skeleton was built. The four destroyed bells were replaced by Van Bergen from Heiligerlee, with the inscriptions of the old bells being taken over. The four bells are named after the children of Queen Juliana. The baroque spire with the lantern shape was built between 1968 and 1970. In 2005 it will be 900 years ago that the church was dedicated to Saint Walburga. On that occasion, two bells financed by the citizens were added to the ringing. The bells are rung manually. In addition to ringing on Sunday, on Saturday evening at 18:00 during church services and church and civil holidays. If you want to join in the ringing yourself, you can report around 15 minutes before the ringing at the foot of the tower! The church still has a small bell in the roof turret, which rings during the worship service during the prayer of the Lord's Prayer and automatically every day at 12:00 and 17:00 and on Friday at 15:00 as an indication of the acceptance of the hour of death of Jesus Christ. → Church bell 1: Van Bergen - Heiligerlee, 1950, 2001 mm, 4800 kg, gis0, Beatrix → Church bell 2: Eijsbouts, 2005, 1867 mm, 3800 kg, a0, Walburga → Church bell 3: Van Bergen - Heiligerlee, 1950, 1671 mm, 2600, b0, Irene → Church bell: 4: Van Bergen - Heiligerlee, 1950, 1475 mm, 2200 kg, cis1, Margriet → Church bell 5: Eijsbouts, 2005, 1359 mm, 1600 kg, d1, Maria → Church bell 6: Van Bergen - Heiligerlee, 1950, 1226 mm, 1475 kg, e1, Marijke → Church bell 7: Eijsbouts, 1996, c3, Our Father bell *The inscriptions on the Van Bergen bells are largely taken from the old bells. With thanks to the municipality and Mr. Ponger of the bell ringers' guild of Sint Walburga!
