Looking at giraffes, zebras or polar bears - millions of people in Germany flock to zoos every year to marvel at mostly exotic animals. Whether they can do this with a clear conscience is controversial. For some, zoos are important places for leisure and education, where research is carried out and which contribute to the preservation of endangered species. Critics see zoos as animal prisons in which animals are not kept in a species-appropriate manner, develop behavioural disorders and suffer. They see the educational and species protection arguments as a pretext to continue to justify the existence of zoos. Is species-appropriate animal husbandry in zoos even possible or should zoos be abolished? We discussed this in 13 questions. #13Questions #Zoos Our participants: Jonas Ems, web video producer Toby Schaper, music journalist Yvonne Würz, PETA specialist for animals in zoos and circuses Jeff Schreiner, veterinarian for exotics and wild animals Chapters: 00:00 Intro 00:50 Should zoos be abolished? 01:53 Why can't you go to the zoo with a clear conscience? 03:00 Do you go to the zoo with a clear conscience? 05:05 Can zoos be an educationally valuable institution? 07:18 What can zoos teach that other educational institutions can't? 13:23 Is the natural design of the enclosures about animal welfare? 17:15 Are there animals that you would prefer not to see in zoos anymore? 23:12 How important are zoos for the conservation of endangered species? 27:45 Would it be better to let some species die out than to keep individual specimens in zoos? 32:14 Can we agree that certain animal species for which life in zoos is particularly painful should no longer be bred? 35:02 Compromise proposal yellow 36:12 Compromise proposal green 13 questions is a format from ZDFkultur.
