The Story of Yusuf Estes - From Darkness to Light. My name is Yusuf Estes. I am originally from Texas, but I currently live in Washington. I converted to Islam about twenty years ago and it was due to one very special incident. Before becoming a Muslim, I called people to Christianity. Wherever I went, I always took my Bible with me, my salib, i.e. cross. I even had a cap with the inscription - "Jesus ... or Isa ... Jesus is our god!" You know, back then I didn't even realize how funny I looked. In those days I was just burning with enthusiasm, preaching what I strongly believed people needed. Preaching words of love, words of peace, and just trying to be a good person… so that when the Day of Judgement – yaum-ul-akhir – comes, we will be ready for it. My daily life, even before I accepted Islam, consisted of two main components – working hard to develop a business in order to make money – tijara, and working hard to call people to Jesus and call for peace. So I was quite surprised that in Islam there was more work, and certainly not less in terms of da’wah. Before I met the person who helped me learn more about Islam, I had a terrible idea about Islam and Muslims in general. To be honest, I was even afraid that I would ever meet a Muslim. When my father told me that we were going into business with a Muslim, I immediately snapped: “No! No way! No! Muslims are terrorists, they are hijackers, they are kidnappers, and then they don’t believe in God. In fact, they worship some black box in the middle of the desert and kiss the ground five times a day.” That was my idea of Islam. A very bad idea. A very bad understanding of their attitude towards women and children. It seemed to me that they just wanted to put everyone in a cage. That was my idea. Although at that time, I didn’t even know a single Muslim until we started a joint business project with our partner from Egypt. When I met our Egyptian, I was rightfully surprised, because I expected to see a man in long robes with a black robe, with a huge turban or imam on his head, with eyebrows growing together and such a stern look... maybe even with a dagger or a sword somewhere in his bosom... something reminiscent of Ayatollah Khomeini, or something like that. But when I happened to meet this man, I was surprised. He was in ordinary clothes. He looked just like everyone else. He didn’t even have a long beard. And he didn’t have any hair at all... because he was bald. He was kind... a very good man. That’s why I immediately thought: “... let’s convert him to Christianity?” This idea immediately came to my mind - “I’ll make a Christian out of him.” But… Allah had a completely different plan… What impressed me most, or as they say in Arabic – ajib, ajiban – something amazing, astounding… was how he… being very quiet, forgiving, kind… but amazingly… how he performed salawat-ul-khams (five times a day prayer) every day. Every day! He strictly performed the prayer five times a day. At a strictly allotted time. He would say to us: “Excuse me, I’m going to be away for a while!” He would go, perform wudu’ (ablution), and after that – Allahu Akbar! He would perform salah (prayer), say dhikr (remembrance), make some du’a (supplication) and immediately return to continue his work. And so – every day, except for one day a week. Yaum-ul-juma’! He would leave all his work and say: “I will be back in a couple of hours.” After which he would get ready, take a car to the mosque, perform his prayer, and return. It would take him about half an hour just to get to the mosque. That is why he asked for a two-hour break. But he would still return and continue working. This man worked seven days a week, and only interrupted his work to perform worship. Another thing - he loved to fast - sawm - on Mondays and Thursdays. And if we wanted to treat him to something on these days, he would politely decline and say: "No, thank you - I am fasting."
