Yung Hurn, the great enigma of German rap, is back after a break of over a year with “Nichts mehr Gefühl” (Nothing more feeling). You can see how Yung Hurn has developed from a German rap alien to a feature darling and finally to a controversial pop star in the PULS music analysis. “Nichts mehr Gefühl” is typical Yung Hurn “Nichts mehr Gefühl” is actually a pretty classic Yung Hurn song - old lyrics about coldness, drugs and failed love, plus melancholic synth sounds by Icelandic producer Mistersir, who also produced some songs on the last Yung Hurn album “Y”. The video for “Nichts mehr Gefühl” is also typical Yung Hurn: In 90s fish-eye and VHS optics, Yung Hurn appears as a hipster version of Kid Rock. Later there are space buns that Björk and every 90s rave girl would be jealous of. In between there are eagles, Ferraris, campfires and lots of randomness. The Yung Hurn story “Nothing more feeling” also marks five years of Yung Hurn in German rap. In 2015 Yung Hurn crashed into the German rap bubble like an alien with his mixtape “22” and since then has been provoking not only but especially German rap real-life fans with weird lyrics, art-study swag and internet humor. Yung Hurn not only hit like a bomb with fans, but quickly became a favorite of ZEIT, Spiegel and Co., which culminated in 2017 with the song “Diamant” and probably the weirdest Yung Hurn music video ever: Yung Hurn together with theater darling and zeitgeist person Lars Eidinger as part of the sleazy 80s soft rock formation “Love Hotel Band”. In 2018, Yung Hurn followed up with the album “1220”, which included songs like “Ok cool” and “Eisblock”. Reorientation after “Live From Earth”? In 2019, Yung Hurn’s last album to date, “Y”, was released, and with controversial songs like “Ponny” it sparked a sexism debate about Yung Hurn’s lyrics. In May 2020, the surprising split from the label “Live From Earth” followed. “Nichts mehr Gefühl” is already being released on the mysterious label “Love Hotel Soundsystem”. It sounds like Yung Hurn is now his own label boss. It remains to be seen whether Yung Hurn is reinventing himself and his music and whether a new album might even be on the way. Yung Hurn was never the type to let his cards on the table. That’s exactly what his fictional character has always been like in recent years. What direction do you think Yung Hurn will develop in now after splitting up with “Live From Earth”? Will he finally become a meme-like fictional character, a serious musician or something completely different?
