Thai-Khmer actually exists. In this clip, I will explain how Thai-Khmer and Khmer scripts are related, and why they are not 100% the same. Even though they use the same basic script, Thai-Khmer has been developed to fit with Thai for hundreds of years, adding tones and special formats that are suitable for Thai. If a Khmer person sees these scripts, they may be able to read the characters, but they will not understand what the writing is because it is Thai, not Khmer. This is similar to the case of Vietnamese, which used to use the ancient script Chữ Nôm (Chữ Nôm) before changing to use Quốc Ngữ (Quoc Ngue) today. Even though Chốc Nôm was the standard for writing Vietnamese for hundreds of years, most Vietnamese today cannot read it. The same is true in Thailand. Thai-Khmer was used to write Thai and several Tai languages. However, after the state-liberation era of Field Marshal P. Phibunsongkhram (1939–1942), Thai-Khmer gradually disappeared from use. This clip will help you clearly see how Thai-Khmer scripts are different from Khmer scripts, and why Thai-Khmer has its own unique identity. It's time for us to re-understand Khmer Thai because it is a part of Thai language and culture that is worth learning! Khom Thai is real. In this clip, I break down the relationship between Khom Thai and Khmer script, showing how the same base script has evolved over hundreds of years to serve the Thai language. With the addition of tone markers and unique forms tailored for Thai, Khom Thai is not standard Khmer script. Even though a Khmer speaker might recognize the letters, they wouldn't understand what's written—it's Thai. This is similar to how Vietnamese once used the ancient script Chữ Nôm but has since shifted to Quốc Ngữ. While Chữ Nôm was widely used for centuries, most Vietnamese today wouldn't be able to read it. I also look at how scripts like Khom Thai fell out of common use in Thailand, especially after the Cultural Mandates during Field Marshal Plaek Pibulsonggram's regime (1939–1942). These historical shifts highlight how scripts, though sharing origins, adapt and transform to meet the needs of different languages ​​and cultures.
