Pedophilia - a blatant (taboo) subject. In the media, the term is often used in connection with cases of child abuse or so-called "child pornography". Gruesome cases such as the one in Lügde, where a man abused children on a campsite for years, or the publication of the controversial documentary "Leaving Neverland" about Michael Jackson recently provided new material for discussion in a debate that is - understandably - extremely emotional. Pedophiles, i.e. people who are sexually attracted to prepubescent children, become child molesters or instinct-driven monsters. However, most sexually motivated crimes against children are not even committed by pedophiles (source: Mikado study). Robin, who is himself the father of a young daughter, wants to know: What is really behind the social stigma? And what do pedophiles themselves say about their inclination? For the new episode of “follow me.reports” he meets 19-year-old Tobias (name changed) for an interview - as always, he also has your questions with him. Tobias is a paedophile. However, he says he has not acted out his inclinations and thereby committed a crime. For almost two years he took part in a prevention program for young paedophiles at the Charité in Berlin in order to control his inclinations. Together with Robin he visits his therapist Umut Özdemir again. Tobias has been aware since he was fifteen that he has a paedophile inclination. This puts him among about 1% of the male population in Germany (source: Mikado study). Although there are certainly women who are paedophiles, the number is comparatively small. In his conversation with Mr. Özdemir, Robin quickly realizes that not every paedophile becomes a perpetrator; many are aware of the ethical and moral problems associated with their sexuality. Those affected did not choose their sexual inclination - but in therapy they should learn to live with their inclination without becoming aggressive. The goal: prevention and behavior control. This requires a lot of strength, but is possible if it remains a sexual fantasies, says Mr. Özdemir. Tobias has completed the program. But there is no lifelong guarantee.
