Along with Samkhya, Vedanta is one of the most popular schools of Indian philosophy today and literally means “end of the Veda,” that is, the early Indian textual tradition understood as revelation (“Veda” → “knowledge”). Studying the Vedas and following the rituals were seen as prerequisites for studying higher knowledge, Vedanta. Only those who were thus purified and belonged to the higher castes were allowed to study Vedanta.
