Gairo is one of the districts listed as having a high poverty rate according to the 2018 NBS statistics. Most of the people are self-employed in the agricultural sector. However, this sector has not yet yielded good results for the people in helping them get out of poverty. The district leadership has begun efforts to remove the people from poverty through awareness and education of the people to change their agriculture, from subsistence farming to commercial farming. In addition, the district is promoting the cultivation of strategic crops that bring high profits including the avocado crop in Nongwe Division which has fertility and good weather. Through the GREEN HERITAGE and FORESTRY PROGRAM in collaboration with the SACGOT Institute and AGRIWEZESHA, the District is implementing an Avocado Farming Project where each household in Nongwe Division is required to have one hectare of Avocado and by July 2025 a total of 2000 hectares are expected to be planted with Avocado seedlings.
