South Korea's Yeonpyeong and Baeknyeongdo islands are only a few kilometers from the North Korean coast. They feel the tensions between the warring brother countries directly. In January of this year, North Korea fired 60 artillery shells towards the South Korean border: Yeongpyeong was evacuated. On South Korea's islands, people make their living primarily from fishing, and this in a heavily guarded border area. Every local trawler must coordinate with the South Korean military ships that are supposed to secure the border with North Korea during its departure. In recent years, however, more and more tourists from the mainland have come to the islands to see the consequences of the tensions on the border: they visit the bombed-out districts and see the bunkers, the observation towers and the soldiers' patrols. Behind the scenes of these tensions, many people on the islands still live with wounds that are older than the most recent bombings. In the 1960s and 1970s, North Korea kidnapped South Korean fishermen and only sent them back home after some time. Many South Koreans then considered the returnees traitors - a stigma that their families still bear today and for which they are only now daring to demand reparations. Also in the hope of peace, which, however, seems to be moving further away every day. #yenpyeong #northkorea #southkorea Video available until 21/07/2027 Link to the media library: https://www.arte.tv/de/videos/119728-...
