Checklist: Safety: – Number and serviceability of life jackets and safety harnesses. – Life raft (EXPIRY DATE!), horseshoe lifebuoy. – Pyrotechnics. – First aid kit. – Bilge pumps – manual and automatic (check operability). – Fire extinguishers (EXPIRY DATE!). – Gas valves and gas alarm. – Where are the water intake holes located below the waterline? – Condition of portholes and hatches. – Emergency fuel supply valve to the engine Engine: – Check the oil level, belt tension. – Start, check if water is flowing, if forward and reverse gear are engaged. – Record the number of engine hours. – Check the availability of spare parts: filters, belt, impeller. Steering system: – Where is the emergency tiller, how is it installed and how does it work? Standing rigging: – Check the attachment points of the shrouds and stays (the presence and integrity of the cotter pins), the tension of the shrouds and stays. Sails and running rigging – If the wind allows, set the sails. Check the condition. Study the reefing system. – Check the condition of the sheets, halyards, etc. – Check the serviceability of the winches, the presence and number of handles for them. – Stoppers. Anchor system: – Check the operation of the anchor winch and find out how to drop the chain and raise the anchor manually. – Where is the circuit breaker? – What is the length of the anchor chain and is it marked? – Fastening the end of the chain to the hull. – Where is the spare anchor? Devices and navigational instruments: – Radio – check its functionality for reception and transmission by contacting someone. – Turn on and check all available devices. – Find out how the echo sounder is calibrated – from the water surface, from the sensor or from the keel. – Check the availability of navigational instruments: ruler, compass and compass-direction finder. Electricity: – Where are the batteries, how are they secured? – Where are the main switches? – Check if the charger works from the shore and the generator. – Are the outside lights on and is there lighting inside? Toilets: – Check how the water is filled and flushed in the latrines, whether the water pumping out of the shower works. – If there are fecal tanks, how to empty them? Water: – Find out where the water tanks and filler holes are. – Where are the valves for switching from one tank to another?! – Is there a water level indicator (or water consumption indicator)? Gas: – Where are the cylinders located, is there a spare? – Location of the gas shut-off valve. Dinghy (tender): – If not inflated, inflate and check if it holds air. – If already inflated, look for a pump for it, make sure it works and is the right diameter. – Check the oars and rowlocks. Outboard motor: – Start it, check if it moves. – Check for gasoline. Mooring lines and fenders: – Check the quantity and condition. Documents: – Check the yacht documents and crew list, availability of maps, sailing directions, instructions for instruments and a description of the yacht itself. – Write down the phone number of the charter company for emergency contact. Damage: – Inspect the yacht outside and inside for damage (scratches, cracks, chips, etc.). – If any, take a photo and/or make a note of it. – If possible, we take photographs of the underwater parts – the rudder blade and the lower part of the keel.
