Everything used to be better, people like to say. A gloomy prognosis, after all, things can only get worse. But there is one point to which the statement is correct. "In the past", that is, 15 to 20 years ago, there was one weight class that was widespread and popular: the seven-and-a-half tonne truck. It was big and powerful for the time, but offered an almost perfect compromise between external dimensions, empty weight, performance and payload for many areas of use. There was the Vario from Mercedes, the G90 from MAN and later the L2000; there was also the light Unimog series and a few exotic models here and there. The body manufacturers offered a wide variety of cabins, with floor lengths between 3.8 and 4.2 metres. This segment has recently become increasingly deserted. This is because demands have increased, but also because the supply of base vehicles has become increasingly scarce: only the Fuso Canter and the Atego from Mercedes were recently considered as new cars, and the prices for used vehicles have accordingly gone through the roof.
