Fury at Dawn - A special agent from Chicago is sent west to capture the notorious Reno brothers. Fury at Dawn (1955) Director Tim Whelan Writers Horace McCoy (screenplay), Frank Gruber (story) Stars: Randolph Scott Randolph Scott, Forrest Tucker, Mala Powers Genre: Western, Adventure, Crime, Drama, Action, Adventure, Crime, Drama, Action Country: United States Language: English Release Date: February 5, 1952 (USA) Also known as Seven Bad Men Filming Locations: Honey Run Covered Bridge, Chico, California, United States Synopsis: The Reno Brothers gang, terrorizing Indiana in 1866, uses the town of Seymour as a safe haven, where the gang bribes three corrupt town officials. Peterson Detective Agency agent James Barlow, who poses as an outlaw, is sent to the town to gain the trust of the officials and the idiot brothers. Complicating matters are Barlow's feelings for Reno's sister, Laura, who reluctantly keeps the house for the boys out of family loyalty. Things heat up and tempers flare when Barlow ensnares the gang in a dawn train robbery. Comments "After burning an undercover agent alive, outlaw brothers Forrest Tucker, J. Carroll Naish and Myron Healy are once again infiltrated, this time by former Confederate super spy Randolph Scott, who has been sent by the Peterson (Pinkerton?) agency to investigate. He ends up falling for the brother's beautiful, law-abiding sister. This is a bit better than some of Scott's usual '50s (non-Budd Boetticher) films, with really good production values, heavy-hitting, entertaining action, and a script that has some great (for '50s) moments of heist and violence. Also, you can't go wrong with Edgar Buchanan as a corrupt judge! Scott gives one of his most solid yet straightforward performances, while Tucker and Naish work well together and almost steal the show as the more ferocious Reno brothers.” By FightingWesterner on IMDb.com “This is a well-chosen, well-directed, tightly scripted (only 87 minutes). The cast is impressive for a fairly low-budget RKO film from the mid-1950s; Randolph Scott was a known star, Forrest Tucker, J. Carroll Naish, and Denver Pyle were all well-known and talented Westerners, and Edgar Buchanan was one of the best Western character actors ever. What hurts the film the most, and is its main flaw, is the setting. Nothing in any shot of the film looks like southern Indiana or any other Midwestern location, and nothing at all looks like California, where the film was actually shot. This lack of authenticity is distracting, in some scenes more than others, but it doesn’t completely ruin the performances. Like some of the other films, I'd like to know more about the historical Reno brothers and how close this film is to their true story; I'm sure it's somewhat closer than Elvis's "Love Me Tender" which was released the following year on the same subject.
