The Takaoka Copperware Traditional Crafts Association (Chairman: Kajiwara Toshiharu) participated in the dismantling and repair of the East Pagoda (national treasure) of Yakushiji Temple in Nara, and was contracted by Nara Prefecture to carry out the first phase of work to replace and repair part of the metal ornament "Sourin" attached to the top of the pagoda, which was completed by the end of March 2018. Yakushiji Temple was founded in Fujiwara-kyo by Emperor Tenmu in 680. It was moved to its current location in 718 when the capital was moved to Heijo-kyo. The East Pagoda is the only building remaining from its founding about 1,300 years ago, and is about 34 meters tall. Dismantling and repair work has been underway by Nara Prefecture since 2009. The restored Sourin is about 10 meters tall. The association made the jewel and dragon seat at the top, the sakkan (a receiving device at the bottom of the water pipe), and one of the nine kurin (a nine-ringed ring), and also repaired metal fittings that had deteriorated and cracked. In order to make the copper alloy the same as it was at the time, the composition is high at 92% copper, 2.5% tin, and a small amount of arsenic. The most difficult part of this project was the finishing process, including coloring. In order to combine it with the existing materials, the color and texture that have changed over the years were reproduced. The association was certified as a bidding contractor by Nara Prefecture based on the results of the aforementioned "National Treasure Horyuji Shaka Triad Reproduction Project," and this was the association's first time working on the restoration of a national treasure. Starting with the creation of the prototype, casting took place in early February 2018, finishing began in mid-March, and the product was delivered in May. On May 28, the company won a bid for the second phase of construction, which is currently underway. This achievement has increased the recognition of the Takaoka copperware industry and contributed to the promotion of the project.
