Siegen-Wittgenstein – the most forested district in Germany. Almost three-quarters are covered by forest. The people here have lived from and with the forest for centuries. It is a habitat for countless animal and plant species, a refuge, but also an economic factor. But the forest is in danger: climate change and the bark beetle are making it difficult for it to survive. A WDR team led by filmmaker Katja Debus experienced a summer in the forests of the Rothaargebirge, between the Sauerland in the north and the Westerwald in the south, and met people who are putting all their energy into making the forest healthier and stronger for the future. People like the young forester Ann-Sophie Bilsing, who has been looking after her own district in the Siegen-Wittgenstein Regional Forestry Office since last year. ????
