Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor your father and mother, which is the first commandment with promise, so that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth. Parents, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the nurture and instruction of the Lord. Slaves, obey your masters as Christ, with fear and reverence, in singleness of heart. Do not do it just in front of them, to please men, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God with all your heart, doing the work of slaves willingly, as to the Lord and not to men. For you know that each one, whether slave or free, will be rewarded by the Lord for the good he has done. And you masters, do the same to your slaves, putting aside threats. For you know that for them as for you, the Master is in heaven, and he is impartial towards people. – Word of the Lord. Psalm (Ps 144 (145), 10-11, 12-13ab, 13cd-14) R/ The Lord is true in all that he says. (Ps 144, 13a) May your works, Lord, give you thanks and may your faithful ones bless you! They will speak of the glory of your kingdom, they will speak of your exploits. They will announce to men your exploits, the glory and the splendor of your kingdom: your kingdom, an everlasting kingdom, your empire, for all generations. The Lord is true in all that he says, faithful in all that he does. The Lord upholds all those who fall, he raises up all those who are overwhelmed. Gospel “People will come from east and west to take their places at the banquet in the kingdom of God” (Lk 13:22-30) Alleluia. Alleluia. Through the proclamation of the Gospel, God calls us to share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. Alleluia. (cf. 2 Th 2:14) Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke At that time, as he was traveling toward Jerusalem, Jesus was teaching through towns and villages. Someone asked him, “Lord, are few being saved?” Jesus said to them, “Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for I tell you that many will seek to enter and will not be able to. When the master of the house gets up and shuts the door, and you start knocking from outside and saying, ‘Lord, open to us,’ he will answer you, ‘I do not know where you are from.’” Then you will begin to say, ‘We ate and drank in your presence, and you taught in our streets.’ He will answer you, ‘I do not know where you are from. Depart from me, all you who work iniquity.’ There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth when you see Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrown out. Then people will come from the east and the west, from the north and the south, taking their places at the banquet in the kingdom of God. For there are last who will be first, and first who will be last.” – Let us acclaim the Word of God.
