The Sheikh was released in 1997 in a prisoner exchange between Jordan and Israel, where the Sheikh was exchanged for two Mossad agents who attempted to assassinate Khaled Meshaal (head of the political bureau of Hamas in Jordan) in exchange for the release of Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, who has since been released and has resumed his political activities.
