In Agrinio, we had the honor of meeting Mr. Yiannis Peslis, a man who shared with us the great story of his life. Mr. Yiannis recounted his childhood, talking about the poverty that prevailed at the time, but also about the decision his father made to have his entire family immigrate to the United States, in search of a better life. He was only 16 years old when they arrived in the US, and his experience was like being in a completely different world. Mr. Yiannis spent the rest of his life in his new homeland. He studied, served in the army, got married and had a family. However, he never forgot his origins. As he spoke to us, Mr. Yiannis remembered Marathos Agrafon, where his father came from, and the emotion was evident in his eyes. Stories about his grandparents came to mind, as well as the wise advice they gave him, urging him to always be an honest person. Today, Mr. Giannis tries to come to Greece every year and visit his special homeland in Agrafa. Although he grew up in the USA, it is clear that in his heart, his Homeland is only one, Greece. Mr. Giannis’ story is a reminder that our roots are part of our identity, regardless of where we are in the world.
