About :

Welcome to the second part of the Survive series. In the first part, the topic was orienteering using natural signs, and then I hiked through the Hammastunturi wilderness without a map or compass. In this episode, the topic is surviving in winter without a sleeping bag and shelter. A tent and sleeping bag burning in the wilderness is a real threat, and one that has happened to me too. Fortunately, it was summer at the time, and the people in question managed to find emergency shelter in the tents of hiking buddies for a few nights before a helicopter picked them up from the wilderness. But what if a similar situation happened in winter? Using a gas stove inside a tent is much more common in winter than in summer. Although a conscious and safety-conscious hiker keeps their sleeping bag and tarp (or some other emergency shelter) at a fire-safe distance from the tent whenever they use the stove, not everyone does this. In the worst case, everything burns down at once, after which they have to spend a night or several nights relying on a survival kit. The video was filmed in February and the training location is an ordinary Finnish forest. This training location corresponds in many elements to my observations from, for example, the Pöyrisjärvi wilderness, Urho Kekkonen National Park, some parts of the Muotkatunturi wilderness and many other hiking destinations. Apart from open fells, Finland has a lot of pine forests where you can find material for building a lean-to and fallen logs for a crack light or campfire. In such a situation, bushcraft skills become more valuable ???? An experienced wilderness visitor may wonder why I didn't make a crack light for a night fire. The idea crossed my mind, but in this survival situation I didn't see it as the most sensible option for the following reasons: -Will I definitely get the crack light to light up? -Will it definitely warm me up enough? If not, then what? -What if it goes out in the middle of the night and I don't have a backup plan? The following things spoke in favor of the campfire: -There was a lot of potential firewood, there was no need to save it -Ignition is easy and the campfire type is very familiar to me -Once I had created hot embers, I could also throw low-quality firewood into it -It is easy to regulate the heat output by adding or reducing firewood -More reliable and flexible Ukrainian bushcraft knife manufacturer BPS Knives: https://bit.ly/40VtEu0 0:00 - 0:20 Arrival at the camping site 0:20 - 2:45 Presentation of the survival situation 2:45 - 3:07 Surviving alone 3:07 - 4:27 Choosing a campsite 4:27 - 5:30 Clearing the campfire site of snow and outlining the lean-to 5:30 - 6:08 Pruning a tree with an axe (Gränsfors Scandinavian Forest Axe) 6:08 - 7:42 Sawing a fallen tree (Silky Bigboy Outback) 7:57 - 9:00 Hypothermia, emergency shelter, wind protection and self-isolation from the ground (conifer bed) 9:00 - 9:41 Vegesake spring mattress - Bushcraft Survival Bed 9:41 - 10:43 The ideology of collecting conifers 10:43 - 11:56 Felling a tree with an axe and a saw 11:56 - 12:51 Conifer bed - Building a conifer bed from spruce branches 12:51 - 14:23 Building an emergency shelter from a space blanket - Survival Lean to Shelter 14:23 - 14:40 BPS Kives Compact Camping Knife 14:40 - 16:18 Building a lean-to from a space blanket - Survival Shelter with Space Blanket 16:18 - 17:37 Emergency shelter ready (coniferous bed and reflective lean-to from space sheet) 17:37 - 19:02 Building a campfire 19:02 - 19:40 Setting up a tarp 19:40 - 20:22 Spruce lower branches 20:22 - 20:49 Chopping firewood 20:49 - 22:00 BPS Knives Bushcraft knife demonstration 22:00 - 22:31 Spark iron 22:31 - 22:57 Sharpening a wick 22:57 - 23:14 Carving a log with an axe 23:14 - 26:46 Lighting a campfire with spruce lower branches in winter 26:46 - 27:58 Picnic food 27:58 - 29:22 Mint vodka and pancakes by the campfire 29:22 - 31:31 Overnight without sleeping bag -11°C 31:31 - 32:50 Morning at the Bushcraft camp 32:50 - 34:50 How was the night? 34:50 - 35:21 Survival challenge ends - Final words
