Sources: https://sites.google.com/view/sources... The universe is incredibly large, and with billions of habitable planets, it seems to have infinite potential for life. A technologically advanced civilization traveling the stars could colonize our galaxy, even at just 0.1% of the speed of light, in about 100 million years. Which isn't that long considering the billions of years that the Milky Way is already old. Any spacefaring civilization should theoretically spread across large parts of the galaxy pretty quickly. But there's no sign of it, no sound. The universe seems to be empty. Nobody but us. This is the Fermi Paradox, which we've already described in other videos. An apparently empty universe presents humanity with a dilemma. We desperately want to know if we are really alone in the Milky Way. We want to make ourselves known, to make ourselves known to anyone who might be out there. But that could be the last thing we ever do. Because maybe the universe isn't empty after all. Maybe there are lots of civilizations, but they all hide from each other. Maybe everyone who ever made their presence known was silently eliminated. This answer to the Fermi Paradox is the so-called "Dark Forest Theory". Things Explained - Kurzgesagt is a science channel that explains complex topics from space research, physics, biology, politics, philosophy and technology in a simple and understandable way in animated form. We publish a new video in German every two weeks. Sometimes translations from our English-language channel, sometimes exclusive content for the German market.
