On March 10, 1906, at 6:34 in the morning, a huge explosion followed by a deadly column of fire devastated 110km of galleries at the bottom of the Courrières mine, in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais coal basin. 1,700 miners went down that day. Rescue had to be organized quickly. But very quickly, a feeling of injustice gripped the miners, who immediately went on strike. The repression was fierce.
