The history of civilization is riddled with painful collective experiences of serious civilizational breakdowns. The normative guiding principles of an egalitarian democracy and egalitarian international law are the most important civilizational achievements in securing peace, peace within society and peace between nations. Both guiding principles have been largely undermined or destroyed in recent decades. Democracy has been transformed into an increasingly authoritarian elite electoral oligarchy and international law has been subjected to the hegemonic claim to power of the militarily, economically and propaganda-wise strongest. As a result of these developments, both guiding principles have increasingly lost their peace-securing power. This dismantling of civilizational achievements is currently intensifying in a way that threatens the future of human civilization as a whole.
