Experts say Putin's order to mobilise will not increase the effectiveness of his troops. Corruption and lack of equipment hamper an army once considered one of the most powerful in the world. The reality is that the prototypes shown off at the Victory Day parade in Moscow on 9 May have not been seen in Ukraine. The Armata tank, supposedly the most modern in the world, with its digital firing system and protected capsule for the crew, has not been seen, nor has the Russian Su-57 stealth fighter, promoted in Russia as one of the best on the planet. Those fighting for Russia in Ukraine are poorly equipped soldiers who take orders from generals far away. As a result, many surrender or flee, leaving behind many more tanks than any Western ally donated. With an ineffective army, Russia could only fight back by firing long-range missiles at civilian targets. But despite the deaths and damage to its infrastructure, Ukraine is determined to resist. With the arrival of systems from Germany and the United States, the Ukrainian Minister of Defense even predicted a new era of air defense in Ukraine.
