The habit of sleeping with parents is harmful to children, especially those who are leaving childhood and entering adolescence. This is what psychologist Rosely Sayão explains. According to her, this habit can cause future problems in the maternal relationship. “Symbolically, it is not just sleeping with the mother, but taking the father’s place,” she says. “This can cause confusion in terms of roles, in how the child will relate to the mother, how he will hear what the mother says to him,” she adds. Rosely advises that parents leave a chair in their children’s room and talk to the child, sing a song or even tell part of a story to calm him down, but without letting him leave his own bed. “We should not abandon the child. The fear he is feeling is real, even if the reason is imaginary,” she says. The best thing, according to her, is not to let this habit start because “it is much harder” to end it than to keep the child in his own bed.
