A newsletter from me, Abdulrahman Abu Maleh, and the Fنجان team, to our close podcast audience. https://thmanyah.link/c773bb When we talk about our history, our ancestors, and the science and civilization they created, we want to understand it in its true form, however it happened. In this episode, my guest George Saliba, founding director of the Farouk Jabre Center for Arabic and Islamic Sciences and Philosophy at the American University of Beirut, and Professor Emeritus of Arabic and Islamic Sciences and Civilization at Columbia University for more than 40 years, explains the history of Arab and Islamic civilization. Arab and Islamic civilization is not a passing civilization, nor a transmitter or translator. Saliba says: “The colonizer succeeded when he convinced the Arab and Muslim intellectual that religion kills science.” He says that the well-known classical narrative about the emergence of Arab civilization, its influence and its influence, is all wrong! He narrates how the Arab Islamic sciences emerged among the early Arabs, especially in astronomy, and the role of Abdul-Malik bin Marwan in this renaissance, in which the Abbasids reaped the fruits of the Umayyads. After it flourished, how did it deteriorate? Was it true that Al-Ghazali published his book “The Incoherence of the Philosophers” that caused science to fall from the hands of Muslims? If not, and this is what my guest says, then who says this? We must know about the other, so I asked him about how Europe rose, how it benefited from Arab civilization, and what effect the discovery of gold, which my guest attributes, had on the European cognitive renaissance.
