Why LAZ 4202 is the most unsuccessful bus of the Lviv plant. Video about the LAZ 4202/LAZ 42021 bus. All ZIL buses from AMO to Bychok • All ZIL buses from AMO to Bychok The new middle-class city bus LAZ 4202 was based on the experimental LAZ 698. Already in 1978, the Lviv Bus Plant, striving to quickly master the production of its first diesel bus, announced the serial production of the LAZ 4202. The LAZ 4202 bus was delivered to bus depots in single copies, and to those that already had experience operating Ikarus diesel buses. At that time, the KAMAZ diesel engine installed on the new bus required a higher level of maintenance compared to gasoline engines and was still a novelty. LAZ 4202 became the first serial diesel bus in the USSR since the ZIS-127. Many complaints about the reliability were caused by the automatic three-stage hydromechanical transmission with a hydrodynamic retarder installed on the new bus. And of course, the transport workers were dissatisfied with the weak body, which quickly loosened. But the bus had its advantages. Unlike the suburban LAZ 695, the new bus was distinguished by a better, urban layout of the cabin. The four-wing doors are also incomparably wider (1200 mm) than those of the 695th LAZ, which makes it easier to get on and off the bus. The floor height is reduced to 72 cm versus almost a meter (990 mm) in the LiAZ 677 bus. The LAZ 4202 has 25 soft passenger seats. In addition to the vents, the passenger compartment is ventilated through three roof hatches with a baffle tray that disperses the air flow without disturbing passengers. The bus was distinguished by a liquid heating system, one heater warms the driver's cabin and windshields, and three heaters installed under the seats warmed the interior. The driver's cabin was also comfortable, equipped with a natural ventilation system with an air intake under the windshield. The driver's workplace had a comfortable seat of KAMAZ design. The steering mechanism borrowed from the Ural 375 truck was with a hydraulic booster. As for the suspension, it is spring-pneumatic with three body position regulators. The front axle was used from the LiAZ 677 complete with brakes and a steering trapezoid. The use of diesel on the LAZ 4202 bus allowed to reduce fuel consumption by an average of 20% and at the same time improve speed qualities - the maximum speed is 77 km / h. For comparison, the LiAZ 677 has a maximum speed of 70. Acceleration from zero to 60 km / h took 33 seconds for the LAZ 4202, while the LiAZ 677 took 10 seconds longer to reach 60 km (44 seconds). Diesel fuel consumption in summer was about 42 liters per 100 km. The LiAZ 677 consumed 55 liters. The control fuel consumption when driving at a constant speed of 40 km / h was 23 liters per 100 km. For the LAZ 695N, this figure was 35 liters, and for the LiAZ 677 - 40 liters. But all these advantages were offset by two big disadvantages in the form of a falling apart body and an unreliable hydraulic transmission. The production of such a model could not continue for a long time and in 1983 the LAZ-4202 was discontinued and replaced by a suburban bus (LAZ-) 4202. In fact, it was the same LAZ-4202 with an effort to strengthen the body as much as possible and replace the automatic transmission with a conventional manual one. With a manual transmission and a diesel engine that was not very suitable for a bus, the (LAZ-)42021 was more suitable for intercity traffic than suburban traffic, so many ATPs began to independently convert these buses into intercity buses. The plant also understood these problems, so in the late 80s, several experimental factory versions of the LAZ-42021 bus appeared at once in a more correct suburban or even intercity form. But in reality, these studies resulted in only a small factory batch of intercity buses manufactured in the early 90s. In addition to passenger modifications, the LAZ-4949 mobile cafe was produced in fairly large quantities. In 1993, after a fire at the KAMAZ engine plant, LAZ-42021 buses of all variants were taken out of production. #laz #bus #laz_4202 #laz_695 #liaz_677 #laz_42021 #ussr_buses #why #ussr
