We visited the wonderful Santa Maria do Monjolinho farm, in São Carlos Sp. José Inácio de Camargo acquired Fazenda Santa Maria in 1850, located on land on the banks of the Monjolinho River and left his sons Major José Inácio and Theodoro Leite de Camargo as heirs. Theodoro obtained great fortune during the golden age of coffee production. In 1886, with the aim of receiving the title of Baron when D. Pedro II visited São Carlos to inaugurate the Railway, Theodoro began the construction of a large house as headquarters for Fazenda Santa Maria. This house was equated with the best and most comfortable residences of the time in the country and differentiated itself by being located in a rural area with an urban architecture like the great palaces of Europe. Even today, more than a hundred years later, one can admire the solidity of its structure and the sober and elegant lines marking the history of coffee wealth in Brazil. Several buildings on the farm date from the same period and form a group that strives for architectural harmony. Next to the house is the administrator's house, with a large bell used to dictate the colonists' work rhythm. Next to a large brick coffee yard, there is a magnificent aqueduct, which carried water to move the water wheel and generate energy for the coffee processing machine. The slave quarters, where the slaves lived, was made up of two windowless compartments. After abolition it was transformed into a colony for Italian immigrants. The house of the “Capitão do mato” is next to a fenced square that has the slave quarters inside. In 1904, the couple Candido de Souza Campos and Zuleika Malta purchased this property with all the furniture and belongings, which are preserved and used to this day by the fifth generation of their descendants. On the first floor of the large house there is a “House Museum” with all the cataloged and listed collections. During your visit to the museum you can listen to beautiful music played on the gramophone, read a rare magazine called Revista Illustrada in the splendid library and learn about history and culture going back to the 19th century. The old Monjolinho train station is located on the banks of the Monjolinho river and within the lands of Fazenda Santa Maria and close to the large townhouse. The Station was used for all transport at the time, i.e. coffee production, milk production, consumer goods, correspondence and passengers. Currently, part of Monjolinho Station is restored and a rural restaurant is operating, serving typical food.
