Alcohol consumption in Germany is dangerously high. Although drinkers generally know that alcohol is a neurotoxin that damages the body and mind, wine, beer and liquor are an integral part of our everyday (weekend) life. In NRW, 18.4 percent of men and 12.8 percent of women are even considered high-risk consumers. Why is that? What does intoxication mean for us as a society? And what rules do alcohol lovers drink according to in order to avoid falling into the often shameful addiction? Johanna Maria Knothe is on the road in the west to learn something about our drinking culture and its history through personal encounters. On pub evenings and drinking song afternoons, on visits to the winery and also in an addiction clinic, this report gets to the bottom of our often surprisingly sensitive relationship to the topic of alcohol. Tradition, intoxication and communal trivialization - a report about our everyday dealings with alcohol. ______ A film for on the road in the west by Johanna Maria Knothe.
