Who has never been through this: When you get home and turn on the switch, the light bulb simply doesn't turn on. So you change the bulb and a few days later, the damn thing burns out again. I bet everyone has been through this situation at some point in their life, right? But what is the technical and mainly practical explanation for this? In today's video, I'm going to show you some of the reasons why this constant burning of light bulbs happens and what you can do to fix it. Contrary to what you might imagine, a light bulb will rarely burn out due to everyday use. Most LED bulbs last approximately 25,000 hours under normal conditions. So, my dear, there are a few reasons why an LED bulb might burn out. One of the reasons could be an overvoltage in the grid. If the bulb receives a voltage higher than it can handle, it will burn out. If you look at the packaging of a bulb, there is technical information about the maximum voltage and the minimum safety voltage. Generally, these voltages in dual-voltage LEDs vary between 100V and 240V. Therefore, a voltage higher than 240V could damage the bulb. One of the factors that can generate an overvoltage in the grid are the maneuvers of the concessionaires or the damage that can occur due to falling trees or very strong winds, as happened recently in São Paulo. And to avoid this type of problem, it is recommended to install a DPS. Not recommended, it is mandatory according to NBR 5410. In addition to protecting your bulbs, it will protect all your electronic equipment, including that top-of-the-line refrigerator and your R$5,000.00 4k TV, so there is no excuse not to install it! Another reason for bulbs to constantly burn out is the issue of local temperature. Again, if we look at the technical information for the bulb, we will see that they have maximum and minimum working temperatures, generally ranging from -10ºC to 40ºC. Therefore, the bulb's useful life can decrease drastically in case of very high or very low temperatures. Since we live in a tropical country, we rarely have temperatures below 0º. But if you think about 40º, lately in several corners of the country it has been breaking records, so it is good to know this. To prevent bulbs from constantly burning out, install the bulbs in well-ventilated places and in fixtures that dissipate heat well. This way, you guarantee the longevity of your bulbs. And speaking of well-ventilated places, another factor that causes bulbs to burn out prematurely is humidity. Most bulbs do not have IP protection, so they are best suited for indoor use in homes. If you need to place a bulb outdoors, use fixtures that have IP65 protection. This way, your bulb will last much longer. Other reasons for bulbs to burn out constantly can be poor contact in both the switch and the bulb socket, either due to the screws loosening due to the heating and cooling that normally occurs during use, or carbonization of the contacts, or even old or poorly maintained wiring. Whatever the problem, it can be easily avoided by calling a professional electrician to perform periodic maintenance on your home. Ideally, this maintenance should be done every year. Basically, he or she will assess the connections, retighten and perform tests where necessary, this ensures safety and energy savings over time. And finally, there is one detail that you need to pay attention to, which is the quality of the bulb used. Low-quality bulbs will have less durable components, which will shorten the bulb's lifespan. Therefore, don't choose your bulbs based solely on price. Choose bulbs from trusted, well-known brands that you know will offer you quality products. Also check whether the manufacturer offers a warranty, and compare their luminous flux in particular. Some promise everything and deliver nothing. Be careful!
