◼︎ Samarkand, Uzbekistan, the largest strategic point in Central Asia where the Gokturks (Turks) and the Tang Dynasty were in conflict, and the gateway between the East and the West. There are traces of Goguryeo in this area. The Goguryeo envoy appears in the Afrasiab Palace mural. This mural is estimated to have been painted between 640 and 660, that is, during the period of conflict between Goguryeo and the Tang Dynasty. The mural does not simply represent the exchange between Goguryeo and the Gokturks. It signifies that Goguryeo, which pursued a pluralistic order, strengthened ties between nomadic states and opposed the Tang Dynasty, which wanted a unitary world order centered on the Tang Dynasty. The conflict between Goguryeo and the Tang Dynasty was not simply a fight between two countries, but a fight for hegemony over all of Asia. The fact that the Gokturks and Goguryeo maintained friendly relations by exchanging envoys can be understood in this context. #KoreanHistory #History #HistorySpecial #HistoryJournal Copyright ⓒ KBS.
