Sadegh Hedayat got acquainted with the French language and culture at the Saint Louis French Language School in Tehran and went to Paris as a student in 1305. During his first trip to Paris, he became more familiar with modern art and culture, fell in love, committed suicide, and wrote some of his most important works. Hedayat finally returned to Tehran in 1309 without getting a degree from Paris, and 20 years later he left for this city again, a journey that was also the end of his life.
