November 1983 President Hafez al-Assad suffered a health crisis and serious complications that led to his isolation and estrangement from power. Rumors and speculations increased due to the concealment of information and criminalization of his health condition at the time. Rifaat al-Assad, the president's brother, who was a member of the leadership in the Syrian Baath Party and the commander of the Defense Brigades and the second man in the state, theoretically began to act as the legitimate heir to the country. With President Hafez al-Assad's recovery from his health crisis, events developed between him and his brother Rifaat to the point that Rifaat gave orders to his forces to move to Damascus and seize power.
