◼︎ Just 10 years after the end of the Imjin War in 1607, the Joseon diplomatic mission set foot on Japanese soil. The Imjin War, in which 2 million people lost their lives and 100,000 were taken to Japan. Why on earth did the Joseon delegation of friendship cross the sea before the aftereffects of that war had even subsided? This was based on the domestic and international situations of both Joseon and Japan. The successive demands for reinforcement by Japan after the Imjin War were the result of the Edo shogunate’s meticulous calculations to solidify its power as the new Japanese regime. In addition, Joseon sought to preserve the foundation of its country, which was still scarred by war. After years of deliberation, the delegation of the diplomatic mission was dispatched with a total of 500 people.
