Why did Hitler fail in Malta? Most European countries were overrun by the Axis powers at the start of World War II. We might think of countries such as France, Belgium, Denmark or Poland. But one island put up fierce resistance and earned a reputation for being impregnable: Malta. It was cut off from its allies and surrounded by enemies. From the very beginning, Malta was therefore one of the main targets for German and Italian bombers. Hitler even wanted to wipe out the island completely. But Malta was to prove one of the toughest nuts to crack in the war. Although it was besieged for two years and bombed continuously – historians today describe Malta as the most bombed place in the entire Second World War – neither Hitler nor Mussolini managed to bring the island to its knees. On the contrary: the capture of Malta marked a turning point in the African campaign and finally caused the Axis powers to surrender. So how did such a small island manage to hold its own against this overwhelming force, why was Malta one of the most important theaters of the war and how did it bring about a turning point in the war? We'll look at all of these exciting questions in today's video! Have fun!
