The course of the Winter War was a great surprise to the whole world. Small Finland, with a population of three million, successfully resisted the might of the USSR for several months. And the war ended with a compromise peace, which meant that the Finns would maintain their independence. But what made Stalin revise his plans and not destroy small Finland? On the battlefield, his troops, although with great difficulty, slowly gained the upper hand. The defeat of the Finns was only a matter of time. And yet the Red Army never entered Helsinki.
